10 fall essentials

IMG_7560.JPG

Fall (fashion) is here! As any die-hard fashionista will agree, fall is hands-down the best season. To me, the introduction of coats, sweaters and boots feels more like the ringing in of a new year than the clink of champagne glasses at midnight on January 1st (notice I purposely avoided the comparison to a certain autumnal spiced beverage - ew). To a certain degree every fall season feels repetitive (at least at surface level), but each year there’s definitely a new list of must-haves that will carry you through the current season and well into winter - whether it be a twist on an classic piece of a new trending hue.

So I’m sharing my list of fall essentials that will take you through the 2020 season in style!

1.Cropped cardigan

This is by far the “it” piece of the fall 2020 season (IMO). Have fun with different weight and patterns of knits (to cable knit and beyond!) and wear them dressed up or down, as tops with skirts or pants and over top of dresses.

2. Leather (anything)

Take your pick. Leggings, jackets, skirts - even sweatshirts! The key is to leverage leather to incorporate texture into your wardrobe, however you feel most comfortable doing so.

3. Moto jacket

I’m generalizing this essential to broaden the scope from the typical leather moto jacket, which let’s be real, most of us already have (if you don’t, stop reading immediately, get one, and then come back). This season I’m freshening it up with suede and in an unexpected bone colour (same, same but different).

4. Printed dress

This one you can carry over from your spring wardrobe essentials list. Even better if the base is a deeper colour (black is a fan fave) and the print is lighter. This helps it feel more in-line with fall colourways, though I am certainly never opposed to flipping the narrative on that “rule”.

5. Wool hat

Hats for President! But seriously, hats all year round - yes please. For fall that means sticking with the style that suits you (fedora, wide brim) but switching up the fabric for a brushed wool in any colour you so desire.

6. Chunky knit sweater

Groundbreaking, I know. But a chunky knit sweater is a great item to refresh every year, if for no other reason than there’s just too many cute choices - it’s impossible to resist!

7. Slim trouser

Even if you’re living your best WFH life, a great pair of slim, ankle length trousers are a must. The best thing about the pleated waist styles that are oh so popular right now is that they are just as comfortable as jeans (arguably more so if you ask me).

8. Co-ord set

Typically I am not a fan of matchy-matchy anything but I will own my hypocrisy this year (or will I…because technically it’s in the spirit of contrarianism that I’m breaking my own rules). Get a coordinating sweater/skirt/pant set. You won’t regret it.

9. Tall boots

Yaaasssss! Finally an alternative to the ankle boot that has ruled F/W for years (not that I don’t love ‘em, but time to mix it up). Personally, I’m feeling drawn to a sleeker, more fitted style than the slouchy, chunkier heeled versions, but to each their own. Knee-high (or OTK) boots are the gift that will allow us to ditch tights when we want to wear a skirt in cooler weather (blessings).

10. Coatigan

The best thing for the weird ‘cold-in-the-morning-hot-in-the-afternoon’ weather is the coat/cardigan hybrid. Not the full weight of an actual coat, but just the perfect level of cozy. I rest my case.

Now that we have our 10 fall essentials, it’s time to move along to all the other perks of the season…Netflix and chill hibernation mode anyone?!

xoxo
